I demand a lot from action cameras. It is no longer enough that action cameras are small and capable of recording videos or taking pictures. I expect that the advancement in technology plus the growing competition in this industry made the requirements more focused on features, especially if it comes with a hefty price tag.

This Akaso EK7000 review will look at whether the words feature-packed and budget belong in the same sentence.

Akaso is a brand dedicated to bringing affordable action cameras to the market without sacrificing video quality of your outdoor adventures.

The EK7000 is one of the Akaso branded action cameras sold around the globe. The company hopes that the action camera stands out from the competition by packing it with a long list of features.

What to Consider When Buying an Action Camera?

The action camera market is saturated with brands and each of them offers a set of features to attract customers in different ways.

One disadvantage is that it gives you a wider range of products to choose from, however, it is the same long list of choices that may spell trouble.

Like a kid in a candy shop, you might find yourself with shiny object syndrome and lost in picking which features you need in an action camera. I know because I was once in your shoes.

Here are some of the most important features in an action camera that you should look for:

  • Video quality – resolution matters in buying any device that shoots pictures and videos. The higher the resolution, you’ll know for sure that you will be getting better quality. Get an action camera that shoots 16:9 aspect ratio videos. This aspect ratio is the standard in videos viewed online through YouTube or consumed in your living room television. It is also nice to have something capable of recording high resolution videos in 1080p or 4K.
  • Battery – battery life should be given the same importance as video quality when purchasing an action camera. You don’t want to find yourself trekking only to discover that you have used up all your action camera’s juices when you are just beginning to shoot. Most action camera users recommend that a decent camera should have a battery capacity that would allow you to use it for at least three hours. It is also best to get something that allows you to easily swap your spare battery.
  • Wi-Fi – this feature is a must-have for all action cameras. It does not matter whether the action camera is on the high-end range or in the budget category. Having this feature in your action camera allows you to use accessories that need Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature also allows you to stream a video feed between your camera and your smartphone.
  • Accessories – action cameras are nothing without accessories. Yes, you can still shoot without them, but the output is not the same as when using accessories. Waterproof cases, mounts, and wireless remotes are just some of the essential accessories for this product.

Akaso EK7000 Features: Should You Buy It?

There might be a thousand questions on your head right now. How long does a 1050mah battery last? Is the Akaso EK7000 remote waterproof? Does the Akaso EK7000 have image stabilization? This section will take an in-depth look at the features of this budget action camera.

Video quality 4/5

An action camera needs to do justice to nature’s beauty. Thank goodness that these little devices are now capable of shooting high-definition content. Gone are the days when the video quality of action cameras is the same league as of that earlier camera phones, which was grainy.

4K – it’s the greatest strength of this action camera. Don’t be fooled by its price tag. The EK7000 really delivers ultra-high-definition 4K video. It is capable of recording professional-looking videos in 4K with 25 frames per second (fps) or at 2.7K with 30 fps. This feature ensures that you are only getting the nicest video without spending more. That way you can easily enjoy your work on your large-screen high-definition television or let it be used in a gigantic electronic billboard.

Aside from 4K, this Akaso action camera also features a wide-angle view capability. It is capable of providing 170 degrees view of any landscape. This feature allows you to fit more people, scenery and action in your videos. This feature also makes the EK7000 stand out in the competition that only offers 120 degrees or 90 degrees angle view.

4K video capability is great, but does the Akaso ek7000 have image stabilization? Unfortunately, it does not have built-in image stabilization. This feature is something that has been an exclusive feature that can only be found in higher-end action cameras from brands like GoPro and Sony.

Video is not only the strength of the EK7000. It can also deliver great photographs. It comes with a 12-megapixel camera with 30 frames per second. This feature can come in handy at times when a picture will do your subject more justice than an ultra-definition video.

Battery 3/5

Juice – this an important matter especially for mobile gadgets meant for outdoor recreation. Since there is no power source to let you recharge, it is a must that your action camera is capable of documenting most of your time outdoors. Many action cameras do suffer from poor battery life. The most high-end action camera can only deliver up to three hours’ worth of video shooting. That number will definitely be less when you opt to shoot in a high-definition setting and use its wireless feature.

So, how long does a 1050mah battery last?

In this Akaso EK7000 review, we give it about 90 minutes of video recording. However, this number did not use the 4K video recording capability of this action camera. If you choose to use that feature, be prepared to see shorter battery life. The good thing with the EK7000 is that it gets that you need more juice to enjoy the outdoors. It has included two batteries for you in the box. This means more time to document your adventures. That’s without worrying about where the nearest power source is.

Wi-Fi and other connectivity features 4/5

Wireless connectivity is now a common feature for action cameras. There are many uses of this feature. Primarily, some action cameras also have built-in social media integration, so this feature allows users to directly post their videos or pictures onto their social media accounts. Having Wi-Fi also extends the ability of your action camera because some of the accessories out in the market use this feature. Wireless remote is one accessory that makes use of Wi-Fi.

The Akaso EK7000 has built-in Wi-Fi and more. This Akaso action camera comes with 2.4G Wi-Fi that allows you to share your videos and pictures with your smartphone, tablet or computer. It also allows you to directly post these into your social media accounts whether that is Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram.

The built-in Wi-Fi in this action camera also connects with the packaged remote control. This remote control allows you to have control over the different recoding modes when shooting a video or taking a photo. It also allows you to shift from recording video to shooting a photo with just a button.

Waterproof 3/5

You might be thinking that the Akaso EK7000 comes with basic action camera features, however, don’t be fooled by its price tag. This little machine can do wonders that may surprise you.

Waterproof is not a feature you would expect from something in the EK7000’s price range. This feature allows you to take your action camera to shoot the wonders of the underworld. The EK7000 is recommended for use up to 30 meters underwater. This means you can shoot videos or take photos of schools of fish, swimming with your friends or while surfing.

Compatibility with accessories 4/5

You might have heard it way too many times, but this point cannot be emphasized enough. Accessories really are essential in your action cam experience. The availability of accessories allows you to create a new experience and expand what your action camera can do.

The good news is that the EK7000 comes with a great bunch of accessories in its package. Not only It has a waterproof case; it also comes with the following:

  • A bike stand
  • A helmet mount
  • Bandages
  • Protective backdoor
  • Clips
  • Mounts
  • Tethers

The Buzz About the EK7000 on Social Media

Akaso is offering the EK7000 as a budget solution to people on the market for an action camera that offers the most bang for their buck. It is no wonder that it is creating buzz for itself online.

A user review rated the Akaso EK7000 as the ultimate action camera even when compared to pricier action cameras from high-end brands. The user explained that his perfect rating came from the very useful remote control, the simple process of replacing the batteries, and great video quality that can easily compete with those made by higher-end products.

A review of the EK7000 described it as an underwhelming affordable action camera. The review notes that while you can pick up this action camera on the cheap, there are some sacrifices when using the EK7000. Image stabilization, audio quality, and color accuracy are what let the EK7000 down in its ambition to be the best low-cost action camera in the market.

Alternatives

The EK7000 is not the only affordable action camera on the market. Definitely, there are a lot of choices, so you might also be thinking about its shortcomings after reading this Akaso EK7000 review. If you cannot live with missing some features not present in this Akaso product, here are some other action cameras to consider:

AKASO EK7000 Pro 4K Action Camera

The EK7000 Pro 4K action camera helps address the shortcomings of its predecessor. The biggest gripe among users of the EK7000 is its lack of image stabilization. Akaso heard its consumers’ rants and gave in what they were calling for in the EK7000 Pro. This action camera comes with everything the EK7000 has. It features ultra-high-quality 4K video recording, wide angle lens, a Wi-Fi-powered remote control, and easily interchangeable batteries.

One gripe with this action camera, though, is its battery life. The EK7000 also suffered from this issue and it is a shame that Akaso did not put much attention on improving the battery life of the EK7000’s next reincarnation.

Campark ACT74 Action Camera

Designed for people who love water and underwater adventures, the ACT74 action camera from Campark is a low-cost solution to pricier action cameras. The ACT74, while being on the budget range, is very capable of competing with offerings from GoPro and other high-end brands. This action camera features the ability to record 4K videos. It also comes with time lapse, slow motion, and loop recording mode. This product features a built-in Wi-Fi that allows you to connect to your smartphone or directly post videos and pictures into your social media accounts.

The biggest letdown with the ACT74 is its mobile app. Campark released this mobile app to make it easier to manage the product, but many have experienced difficulties pairing the app with the ACT74.

AKASO V50 Elite 4K/60fps Touch Screen WiFi Action Camera

The V50 Elite is Akaso’s second entry in this alternative list and it rightfully deserves its slot. This action camera is not only affordable, but it also packs in the most features. Like the EK7000, it is capable of shooting 4K videos, and can be used for shooting underwater during dives.

One thing that sets it apart from the EK7000 is that this comes with image stabilization. It comes with a built-in Advanced Electronic Image Stabilization that corrects shaking footage.

Is It the Best?

Yes, for its price. High-end action cameras tend to be pricey. Some of them might even underdeliver with their asking price, however, that is not the case with the EK7000.

The EK7000 from Akaso delivered in its ability to record high-definition 4K videos and its ease of use. It was able to deliver well-detailed, sharp, clear images in both video and picture modes. While there are some users raising issues over its color accuracy, that happens on a case-to-case basis based on my experience.

In terms of ease of use, its in-package wireless remote is a bomb. It connects through Wi-Fi and allows you to easily control the action camera even while you are on the middle of shooting and it is placed on a mount.

Sure, it will not be included in the list of “which action camera has the longest battery life,” and it definitely won’t be the “action camera with the most color accurate video or image” list, but its advantages are more than any of its shortcomings.
